Anna Rydlówna Hanna Chrzanowska Stefania Poznańska Maria Epstein Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,

I would like to invite you to take part in the International Training Conference on "100 Years of Nursing in Poland. Theory and Practice of Nursing in the 21st century.", organized by the Institute of Nursing and Midwifery of the Health Sciences Faculty of the Jagiellonian University Medical College in Krakow. The co-organizers are: the Regional Chamber of Nurses and Midwives in Krakow and the Polish Nursing Society.

It will be my great pleasure to welcome all the guests, willing to participate in the Conference and enrich their knowledge on the latest scientific achievements in nursing science. Many outstanding experts from Polish and foreign universities, research centres and associations have already announced their participation in the Conference.

The time when the Conference takes place is unique, It is 100 years since the establishment of the first School of Professional Nurses in Krakow (1911). The main organizers of the school were: Maria Epstein, Anna Rydlówna, Maria Wiszniewska and Joanna Stryjeńska. The lectures will be conducted by prominent professors of the Jagiellonian University. The centennial nursing anniversary coincides with another significant anniversary. It is the 14th Anniversary of the formation of our present Faculty of Health Sciences (the name functions from 2007), which resulted as the combination of what was then the Nursing Faculty and the School of Public Health.

Contemporary nursing is a scientific discipline, which develops dynamically and combines elements of many other sciences with rapid progress: biomedical and clinical, humanistic and social, with rapid progress. The nurse's role is to develop and meet the health needs of the society. To cope with this task, a continuous monitoring of the scientific progress is necessary. The themes of the Conference relate both to the problems of clinical care, the education of nurses and midwives as well as basic sciences and their role in nursing. It is my belief that every participant will find interesting topics in the Conference programme.

I cordially invite you to come to Krakow, where you will be able to join interesting lectures, meetings with outstanding experts and scholars from the nursing field. The Conference provides also an opportunity to meet your colleagues as it is combined with the Graduates' Reunion. I hope you will also find time to relax in the unforgettable atmosphere of the royal city of Krakow.
